Caroline Maguire might be a Bay City native, but she has made New York City her home, rooting herself to the bustling metropolis as one of its notable fashion gurus. As the Fashion Director of Shopbop, Maguire is a veteran of the New York Fashion Week scene, and is our inside guide to the latest news from the Fall/Winter 2019 shows.

As Shopbop’s resident authority on style and trends, Maguire is tasked with creating a contemporary, youthful vision for the site’s editorial shoots, which means her eagle eye is trained to spot hot new brands, novel accessories, and the next season’s must-haves. A polar vortex meant NYFW-goers experienced inclement weather ranging from rain to plunging temperatures and snow. How did you prepare your wardrobe for the week so that it was both functional and fashion-forward?
Being a New Yorker has definitely affected the way I dress. I’m all about sneakers, flats, and easy shoes. I can’t be bothered to run around in heels all day when the weather is as temperamental as it is during the winter! My pro tip is to plan the night before. You can stick to your go-tos and add on from there to make sure it’s both fashion-forward and functional for the weather.

What are the top five trends that you noticed emerging during the Fall/Winter 2019 shows?
It’s so hard to narrow down! So far, my top five trends from this season have been statement prints (animal, plaid, paisley), the return of suiting (trousers with matching blazers), box handbags, boots (platform, square toe, mid-shaft, structured and tall), and last but not least: statement jewelry – berets included!

What were some personal highlights of NYFW that you experienced this season?
This season was full of feel-good moments. From breathtaking collections seen at Marc Jacobs and models dancing down the runway at Staud to seeing all of our designers and friends in town for the season, it was a whirlwind of excitement. All that to say, attending these shows with the Shopbop team is an amazing experience – we’re lucky to do it together every season!

A lot of cool young talents like Telfar and Matthew Adams Dolan are starting to emerge from New York. Who do you have your eye on?
Some of the best new designers and brands are based here in New York. Shopbop is lucky enough to carry quite a few of them – Sandy Liang, R13, Nanushka, and Khaite are a few of my personal favorites right now.

What do you always have stashed in your bag during Fashion Week?
My friend Jayne makes these amazing scented oils that cater to your specific needs. I carry mine around to help keep me calm and relaxed – it’s a lifesaver. I always have vitamin C, oversized sunnies, and plenty of phone chargers!

Where are your favorite spots in New York to recharge after a hectic day?
My favorite place to be after a hectic day is home with my kids and husband! I do try to make time for myself during the craziness of Fashion Week – self-care is so important. Heyday is a great spot to brighten up your face, and I love going to Vanity Projects to get my nails done.
