While Elie Saab’s gorgeous Spring 2019 Couture presentation made reference to mermaids and the sea in a more metaphorical sense, Zuhair Murad made the analogy more literal. Sea life around the globe is under threat because of climate change, and so it remained at the fore of what many designers worked on for the couture season. Whether it was represented by enchanting mermaids or printed ocean scenery, the aquatic theme was inescapable at the Spring 2019 Couture shows.

At Davos in Switzerland, one of the world’s leading naturalists, Sir David Attenborough, explained that we have left the Holocene epoch and entered the “Anthropocene” era, or the era of humans. What we do next as a people on this planet can affect the very course of our existence. The health of our oceans are integral to the health of our people, he warned. If the couture shows are any indication, the human collective unconscious is already attuned to the problem of ocean survival. Every poetic ode and homage made that radiantly clear.

Murad’s loving ode had our minds fixated on the sea.

With slicked back, wet-looking hair, the models were transformed into sea nymphs in a dazzling array of prismatic blue hues, touched with sparkling embroidery, glittering paillettes, and coruscated sequins that came in seashell, wave, and frothy ocean-foam patterns. Prints depicted underwater scenery and silky fabrics that were so reflective they literally resembled water – a planetary resource that we would do well to protect. While Murad’s loving ode had our minds fixated on the sea, his careful craft also transported us to a serene and appreciative state. Fashion is both a reflection of the times we are in, and an escape hatch when reality becomes too much to bear. At Murad’s lavishly embellished presentation, we were reminded of both qualities, which is a credit to his sensitivity and his craft.
