Lebanon – where couturier Georges Hobeika hails from – was once known as the “Paris of the Middle East” for its 20th century explosion of music, fashion, and culture. It makes sense that the two cities, separated by thousands of miles of distance, would remain inextricably linked after all of this time because they both forged strong artistic identities, despite the pressure and hardship of war.

For Paris, it was the French Revolution that informed one of its most iconic cultural periods, a time when Marie Antoinette nearly bankrupted the state due to her lavish taste and outrageous spending habits. Yet, she remains a romantic figure in history books and one of fashion’s most notable denizens. For Spring 2019 Couture, Hobeika’s homage to this infamous queen picks up where the couturiers for the French courts of Louis XVI left off.

Antoinette’s signature silhouette was form-fitting at the bodice (which was always lavishly decorated with beading, floral appliqués, and silky bows) and extravagantly outsized and padded at the hips. Her gowns were always several feet wide in diameter, ensuring that lowly patrons could never get close enough to touch her fair skin. In imitation of this classic 18th century silhouette, Hobeika structured his garments similarly so that they flowed from fitted at the top to exaggerated volumes at the bottom.

None of the looks, however, read old-fashioned. Instead, they were elegantly modernized for the 21st century.

Intricate bodice-work and decorative elements glittered from every surface. Some were completely encrusted in an overlapping display of crystal and beaded paillettes, others were layered with shards of shattered glass. Others still came with stunning, micro-sequined ropes that braceleted the shoulders. None of the looks, however, read old-fashioned. Instead, they were elegantly modernized for the 21st century, while retaining a sense of finery befitting royalty.
