María de los Ángeles Félix Güereña – or María Félix as she was known far and wide – was Mexico’s most famous actress, both for her on- and off-screen antics. Similar to Elizabeth Taylor, her multiple marriages, fine sense of fashion, and flamboyant personality made her a fixture in the international press. For Spring 2019 Couture, Ralph & Russo viewed Félix as the ideal muse, fashioning a couture show that paid homage to her talents and formidable style.

With such a lively character to reference, the collection felt exuberant as the design duo behind Ralph & Russo cut loose with an explosion of complex textures, asymmetrical details, feathery volumes, and experimental proportions. An opening array of vibrant suits paid homage to Félix’s character in Doña Bárbara, the film that launched her international star status. It saw the daring young actress play a tyrannical ranch owner who dressed in men’s clothing. It also happened to be a pitch-perfect beginning, owing to the suit’s recent ubiquity on the red carpet.

Elsewhere were feather-trimmed minidresses and lithe versions decorated with pom-poms. There were floor-length kaftans covered in metallic appliqués and marabou feathers, delicate slips created from diaphanous beaded fabrics, feminine chiffon gowns, and dresses covered in opalescent tinsel fringe. One of our favorite looks was an ivory gown with a tiered waterfall skirt that was decorated in a banana motif and finished with holster-like black straps. It was couture outside the confines of the expected.

Suffice to say, Ralph & Russo’s collection was as electrifying as the always prismatic Félix herself.

Suffice to say, Ralph & Russo’s collection was as electrifying as the always prismatic Félix herself. In her lifetime, she was painted by Diego Rivera, offered Nefertiti’s crown by King Farouk of Egypt, and considered one of the world’s best-dressed women by the haute couture realm. Between the genre-defying performances that defined her film career and a quixotic personal life with its multitude of entanglements, perspectives, and patrons, it takes a stalwart collection to capture her magnetism – and Ralph & Russo did just that.
