Sometimes progress can be quantifiable, something that you can measure with metrics that prove growth. So, it’s with facts and not just feelings that we say Arab designers have had their biggest red carpet year ever in 2018, dressing the world’s biggest stars at the most important events – from the Oscars and Emmys to film premieres and festivals around the globe. Every year, there is a noticeable uptick in Arab names on the red carpet, but no year on record has seen so many incredible sartorial moments as this one.

Cardi B set the bar high at the beginning of the year in a sculptural Ashi Studio gown that was the talk of the Grammys, while Reem Acra dressed two veterans of the Academy Awards circuit, Allison Janney and Helen Mirren. A bevy of Lebanese couturiers, like Elie Saab, Rami Kadi, and Jean Louis Sabaji, held court at Cannes Film Festival, dressing supermodels like Bella Hadid and Alessandra Ambrosio.

When Ocean’s 8 premiered in September, Sandra Bullock had a buzzy red carpet moment in a dramatic Saab gown, while Emily Blunt rounded out our round-up in one of the most worn Arab red carpet designers of the year, Zuhair Murad, whose feminine, glittering designs are a constant favorite of stars like Jennifer Lopez and Hailey Bieber as well.

While France and Italy have long been the vanguard of red carpet style, the fine ateliers of the Middle East have risen as a challenger, and this year, they might have just swept the title.
