Being referred to as a “special guest” is quite possibly an understatement when it comes to the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, but on Monday night at the British Fashion Awards, she was just that. Presenting the Womenswear Designer of the Year award to the designer of her now-iconic wedding dress, Claire Waight Keller, Meghan took center stage and gave a royal surprise for the event’s attendees. Elegant in a one-shoulder, all-black velvet Givenchy dress, and black nails — something the Queen is rumored to dislike — the expectant mom praised her friend as she cradled her baby bump.
Hair slicked back into a neat bun, black nails to match the dress and accessorized with stunning Pippa Small earrings and bracelets, the whole look was every bit as classic and fashion-forward as the Duchess herself. While taking a sneaky break from style protocol, Meghan took the opportunity to praise women, as she addressed her connection with Claire by speaking about clothing, saying that, “sometimes it’s very personal, sometimes it’s emotional. But for me, this connection is rooted in really being able to understand that it’s about supporting and empowering each other, especially women.” Her choice in accessories doubled down on the message through the support of Pippa Small — an ethical jewelry designer, anthropologist, human rights activist, and Survival Ambassador. Once again using her platform to give a voice to others, the philanthropic Duchess gives us yet another reason to adore her.
