To tame one of nature’s wildest creatures, one needs to have a delicate touch that can command respect, an aura stemmed in strength, and the ability to nurture – something that the escaramuza horsewomen of Mexico know well. It is their athletic prowess and attire for charreada, a competitive discipline similar to rodeo, that inspired the Dior Cruise 2019 collection. They’re bold and empowering, so it came as no surprise that Maria Grazia Chiuri looked to them to guide her designs.
It’s also no wonder that the intricately feminine collection fits Jennifer Lawrence – a lifelong horseback rider and the face of Dior since 2012 – like a glove. Highlighting the contrast between a vast desert landscape and architectural concrete walls, the actress modeled petticoats, traditionally embroidered dresses, and button-downs in a striking white and blue palette for the collection’s campaign.
These ladylike silhouettes are accented with dashes of masculinity, leather corsets, and rubber ankle boots, all of which have been captured by Dutch artist and photographer Viviane Sassen. Featuring the Dior ‘Book Tote’, the ‘Saddle’, and the ‘Oblique’ – as well as a beautiful black stallion – the campaign exudes the modern, liberated femininity that Lawrence is synonymous with.
