Little did costume designer Mona May know at the time, but when Cher Horowitz paused in front of her digital wardrobe and selected a coordinated yellow plaid ensemble in the iconic 1995 teen comedy Clueless, she was forever immortalizing the look. Plaid went on to play a significant role in the film’s wardrobe across a multitude of characters – it was the 90s after all – and ever since, it’s had a strong association with that particular moment in time.

Because of fashion’s cyclical nature and rapid production schedule, the popular pattern has popped up many times over, but for Fall/Winter 2018, it came back with a vengeance thanks in large part to runway collections that were soaked in colorful coordinated versions – especially at Versace, which did a very literal homage to Cher Horowitz and her polished L.A. look.

Take us at our word when we say plaid is everywhere for the season, and not grunge-inspired, 90s flannels either, but cool, sophisticated, modern versions that fashion girls can’t stop “adding to cart”. If you’re in search of some seasonal inspiration, and want pieces that work for day, evening, and the office at price points both affordable and aspirational, look no further than Savoir Flair’s edit below.
