Having spawned some of the world’s most iconic characters, there are few entities with a bigger fan following than Disney. However, there has been a sharp uptick in Disney-themed fashion in 2018, and it has to do with the progenitor of the whole thing: Mickey Mouse. The reason? The wildly popular cornerstone character of the Disney empire is celebrating a major milestone this year: his 90th birthday.

While most credit his creation to company founder Walt Disney, Mickey Mouse was actually created by Ub Iwerks, who is also responsible for many of Disney’s early characters. Mickey Mouse first made his appearance on November 18, 1928 in iconic short cartoon Steamboat Willie, which wowed audiences with its combination of synced-up sound and animation. In celebration of his upcoming birthday, all manner of fashion brands have jumped at the chance to create Mickey-themed collections. Whether you’re a Disney aficionado or avid trend-follower, these collections are the definitive way to express your fandom and fashion know-how.



Nothing could be more all-American than a Mickey Mouse-themed collection by Levi’s. Featuring a ton of grinning Mickey appliqués, it offers comfortable denim separates, shearling-lined bomber jackets, and sweatshirts that vibe with the 90s trend.

Opening Ceremony

Opening Ceremony’s designers – Humberto Leon and Carol Lim – are longtime fans of Disney and have even staged Disney-themed presentations, like The Happiest Show on Earth earlier this year. For Fall/Winter 2018, the label continues its Disney adoration with a new collection featuring edgy pieces like A-line minidresses, faux-fur coats, and voluminous taffeta gowns. Vans also got in on the action by creating custom shoes for this collaboration.

After the success of Coach’s Disney-themed collection called ‘Dark Fairytale’ in May, the leather goods and ready-to-wear brand is back with new offerings that center on Minnie Mouse. She makes an appearance on rich-colored coin purses, totes, and wallets, all of which make the perfect gift for the upcoming holiday season.

Gucci has been at the forefront of pop culture and fashion merging since Alessandro Michele took over, which is why we weren’t surprised when we spied a handbag shaped like Mickey Mouse’s head on the label’s Spring/Summer 2019 runway. Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait for the new season to get your hands on one.
