Although it contends with mega-brands Chanel and Louis Vuitton on the final day of the Paris Fashion Week calendar, Miu Miu hits a sweet spot every season, making it the cherry on top of an exhausting marathon of events. For as long as it has existed, the brand has always had a clear relationship with a younger demographic, providing plenty of twee with a hint of irony – it’s Prada’s little sister after all. For Spring/Summer 2019, Miu Miu offered a bevy of contradictory ideas but made it harder to distinguish the lines that used to separate its offerings from Prada’s.

Miu Miu hits a sweet spot every season, making it the cherry on top of an exhausting marathon of Fashion Month events.

It started with nylon cocktail dresses decorated with smushed blossoms, which were accessorized with knee-high socks and platform Mary Janes – all staples of the Prada universe. The Miu Miu girl for Spring/Summer 2019 was a cross between prim and punk, serving buttoned-up menswear and completely sheer skirts in a way that was suggestive but still aloof. Sharply tailored blazers, handsome double-breasted crocodile outerwear, and leather coats kept some of the wilder looks from steering off course, although they didn’t really read as typical Miu Miu fare.

However, chunky cardigans, sparkly pencil skirts, and shabby-chic mini dresses were very much what we’ve come to expect from the brand. The contradictory nature of Miu Miu’s show – its girl is off somewhere doing her taxes while tapping her pencil to the rhythms of Siouxsie Sioux – was a good supporting narrative, but the clothes felt edgy even when they looked conservative. Naturally, there’s going to be some crossover between Prada and Miu Miu, but at times with this show, it was hard to tell the difference between them anymore. Do we need two perspectives from Prada? At the very least, the diffusion-line price points make Miu Miu an attractive alternative to the same ideas.
