In her first outing as her own boss, having bought back a majority stake in her company from the luxury conglomerate Kering, Stella McCartney played it safe. Ever since McCartney first entered into partnership with Adidas, athleisure has been a mainstay of her ready-to-wear collections, and she didn’t stray far at all from her sporty streetwear signatures for Spring/Summer 2019. With a supporting theme of being comfortable in one’s own skin, McCartney turned to casual wardrobe staples like tie-dye tees and bedroom favorites like silky slips to inject her line-up with athletic vigor.
At this point, athleisure is so widespread it’s been disseminated among some of the haute-iest luxury brands in the industry, but Stella McCartney has been marking this territory for years – which is why she is able to approach the category with such a command of its language. For the fitness-minded (or those faking it), your next visit to the gym will be ultra-stylish in McCartney’s neoprene bodysuits upholstered in parlor-room prints and roomy tie-dyed tees.

If volatile sports are more your thing, you could easily skate, spin, or swing a racket in one of her lightly-ruffled skater dresses – or at least look the part. Mannish suits, tangerine co-ords, acid-washed boiler suits, and slouchy knitwear were proffered for the Stella McCartney woman who had places to be and things to do, while lingerie and soft crocheted trousers were what she slips into for an evening out. For after hours excursions, McCartney cleverly turned the term eveningwear on its head, by introducing a line-up of Lurex and sheer nightgowns (get it?) fitted with dramatic balloon sleeves.
