They’ve made us laugh, they’ve made us cry, they’ve made us scream in terror. They’ve played desperate housewives, 1950s secretaries, supernatural teenagers, battered wives, stylish friends in New York City, comedy show producers, dagger-wielding outlaws, and even sentient robots. They’re the women who have dominated television broadcasting for decades, and they are fabulous. 

From funny leading ladies like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler to high-stakes drama veterans like Claire Danes and Kerry Washington, we love to watch their talents play out on the screen. We also love to take in what they’re wearing on the Primetime Emmy Awards red carpet, which is why we’ve put together a retrospective of the best looks in the past three decades – just in time for the 70th edition this week.
