Let’s face it: the weather conditions at the Dior Cruise 2019 show were not bad, they were downright terrible. It might sound like hyperbole, but the literal minute the show started (9:17 p.m. for the curious), so did a torrential downpour, leaving guests, models, and Maria Grazia Chiuri’s astonishing creations soaked. Yes, it was less than ideal, but it was also poetic as the dark, cranky skies above happened to throw the beautiful clothes and dazzling accessories into sharp relief.

While the audience didn’t dare tarry too long in the rain, the breathtaking embellishment and embroidery details warranted consideration – one not afforded by the proceedings at hand thanks to the intervention of Mother Nature. Guests might have hastened to the after-party to flee the damp scene, but we were desperate for a better look. Showcasing precious Chantilly lace fabrics, embellished tulle layers, multicolored knits, and rainbow beading, Dior’s Cruise 2019 gowns and accessories are shown in mesmerizing detail in the behind-the-scene photos, above, shot by Ines Manai.

This is how the collection deserves to be seen.
