Call it the party of the year, the first Monday in May, or just a really great excuse for dressing extravagantly to very specific standards — the Met Gala red carpet had us shook. Suffice to say that with the exhibition theme of “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” – which explored the relationship between fashion and the papal church – and the gala’s “Sunday Best” dress code, looks were divided between sinners and saints. There were gilded angels, gladiator women, and goddesses as well as temptresses and warriors.

Although some looks were thematically divided, everyone seemed to agree that extravagant trains were the look du jour (it took Nicki Minaj’s train a full 30 seconds to make it all the way out of the vehicle that dropped her off), and so were massive, eye-catching headpieces fashioned into either crowns or halos. In keeping with the Met Gala’s theme, Ariana Grande went with a look that reimagined the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in sartorial form, Katy Perry donned a massive pair of wings that had some joking that she “overdid it with Red Bull”, and Evan Rachel Woods wore a gilded cape covered in angelic feathers. Naturally, the gala’s co-chair, Rihanna, was there upstaging them all in a jaw-dropping, densely embroidered look replete with its own Pope hat.

Finally, as the co-chair of the event, Donatella Versace’s ultra-glam, figure-skimming gowns were a red-carpet favorite, repped by lithe former and current supermodels like Cindy Crawford, Gisele Bundchen, and Gigi Hadid, as well as bold stars like Zendaya and SZA.
