Every day, it seems like there is new information trickling out about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s impending nuptials, which take place on May 19, 2018. From Markle’s wedding bouquet – which will be made from white roses in honor of Princess Diana – to the fact that all five Spice Girls were invited to the ceremony and reception, there are a lot of details floating around about what to expect from the royal wedding.

While most of it might seem like much ado about nothing, one detail caught our eye. Markle has been praised for taking a slightly more non-traditional approach to the British royal ceremony (which has a very strict script to begin with), but there’s one area where she’s sticking with tradition: the dress code. Ladies in attendance are required to wear a formal day hat, something of a European specialty and a sartorial code long adhered to by royal heads-of-state.

Naturally, over the years, there have been some fairly extravagant hats at royal events, and we’re kind of living for them. From sculptural works of art that reach stratospheric heights to feathered and floral finery, Savoir Flair takes a look back at some of the best royal hat moments. Over-the-top doesn’t begin to describe some of the looks you’ll discover below, and we’d also like to point out that Queen Elizabeth II has a royal hat made to match each outfit, exactly, which is a marvelous detail in and of itself.
