Building on the momentum of the 2017 trend, statement tees go one of two ways in 2018: either politically charged or branded and logo-fied. There really is no in-between when it comes to making a statement in a year that’s already rife with both societal upheaval and shifting winds in the fashion industry. In a way, these two extremes represent where fashion’s mindset is right now – caught somewhere between an authentic desire to drive societal change by giving people the tools of activism (translation: clothes that convey your values with clear messaging) and commercialism obsessed with the brand relevance.

Smart brands, like Dior, synthesized the two, providing both logo recognition and political statements in tandem with tees that ask, “Why Are There No Great Women Artists?” or declaring “We Should All Be Feminists.” Others, like Stella McCartney and Chloé, provided rallying points for “woke” consumers by participating in International Women’s Day with bespoke designs.

In the opposite corner, out-and-out logomania has taken over at brands like Versace, Balenciaga, and Gucci, and fashion girls can’t get enough of these high-priced investment tees either, which happen to pair well with just about anything.

Truthfully, there’s nothing wrong with being a devoted follower of fashion, and there’s nothing wrong with wearing one’s political leanings on a literal sleeve either. Just because these two extremes exist as a fashion trend in 2018, doesn’t mean one is right and one is wrong, or that you even have to choose between the two. In fact, the inspiring celebrities and influencers you’ll find below are comfortable enough to admit to obsessing about both politics and fashion – it’s just more fun when they happen to coincide.
