In cyber crime thrillers, “black hat” operatives are the bad guys, hacking away at the systems that support the establishment in order to wreak havoc, but in 2018, black hats are the hero of the accessories world. In fact, the hat in general is one of the year’s biggest trends thanks to a confluence of reasons: climate change causing unpredictable weather patterns, anti-establishment symbols like the beret making a comeback in a politically charged global society – the list goes on and on.
While Dior cornered the market on the hat trend earlier last year with berets and fedoras that we saw everywhere at Fashion Month, they were also a major presence on the catwalks of Marc Jacobs, Jacquemus, and Michael Kors for Fall/Winter 2018, meaning the trend will carry through the whole year. Not only are major high-fashion brands and high-street retailers alike getting in on the trend, but every conceivable hat style is also in fashion right now.
We’re talking bucket hats, fedoras, cowboy hats, berets, baseball caps, baker boy caps, biker hats, oversized straw hats, and more. Suffice to say, 2018 is the year of the hat, and celebrities are out to prove it in droves.
