For Fall/Winter 2018, over at Giambattista Valli – whose fluffy, confectionary aesthetic is well honed by this point – a dark indigo jumpsuit opened the show, complete with printed flats trimmed in fluff. We practically did a double take. Denim jumpsuits at Valli? Surely, this sea change was a sign of things to come.

In what was his most directional collection in recent memory, Valli decided to alter the landscape. It was a tribute to jetsetters, to the exhilaration of discovery that comes with travel and the pieces that one might collect along the way. As such, it offered a cultural melting pot of ideas, which is particularly timely given that rising generations are identifying more and more as “multi-localists”, citizens of more than one community, township, or city.

Taking broad aim at travel luxe, Giambattista Valli dished up some of its most interesting looks yet. That meant the brand’s ultra-feminine signature arrived only at the end and was led by trim trousers finished with glitter stripes, oxblood moto jackets, artisanal crochets, crisp wool coat-dresses, three-piece checkered suits, long monastic frocks, corduroy dusters, and mixed-print surfaces galore.

Although this was a well-calculated collection with huge commercial appeal, one misstep came from the beauty looks. Occasionally, and seemingly out of nowhere, a model would appear with a full glitter mask painted on her face, but take a quick look back at Givenchy’s Spring/Summer 2014 collection and you’ll see where that idea came from. When the clothes and accessories are urging a new way forward, it’s better to leave such replications behind.
