Paris was last (on the Fashion Month calendar) but by no means least. The maisons of France collectively presented the most diverse week yet, a melting pot of all things fantasy, sports-inspired, and spectacularly beautiful. Most noteworthy was Balenciaga, which broke the internet with its piled-up coats à la Joey Tribbiani in TOW No One’s Ready. Then came Miu Miu, the epic casting of which saw Adwoa Aboah and Slick Woods sashay down the runway in bundles of leather and layers.
In short, Paris provided the perfect conclusion to what was an interesting month of fashion. And now that it’s all over, what seemed like a random collection of off-the-wall ideas during our first #TrendTakeaway installment now makes perfect sense as a season. Keep scrolling to discover the last four trends of the season and make a mental note (or Pinterest board) of things to buy for fall.
Go big or go home.
With Parisian temperatures dropping way below zero this week, it’s no surprise that showgoers sat catwalk-side bundled up in layers. However, no one could have predicted the sheer volume (literally) of oversized coats that would take over PFW. Balenciaga sent its models down the runway in no less than four coats at a time, while Lacoste experimented with major volume.
The girlier, the better.
Noughties throwback alert! Floor-length pleats are officially back and, this season, the girlier, the better. Acne and APC did pleats in a very ‘90s way – using tiny floral prints – while Balmain and Elie Saab made a case for maxi skirts as perfect evening attire.
Striped Knit Hit
Getting knitty with it.
Sweater vests, ponchos, maxi dresses, or floor-length cardigans – if it was knitted, it was striped. Horizontal and vertical lines are a trend that crops up season after season because it’s so wearable for just about every style. Look to Acne for super-cozy styles or Sonia Rykiel for polished pieces.
The Little Mermaid
Sequins, sparkles, and shine.
Calling all unicorn/fantasy/glitter-obsessed girls: this one is for you. Going out with a supercharged bang, Fashion Month’s final trend is iridescent everything. Balmain did this beautifully on pieces ranging from tasseled minidresses to opaque trousers, while Margiela made statements with shimmering plastic coats.
