“Here’s to strong women. May we know them, may we be them, may we raise them.”
Although the source of this quote remains unknown, these powerful words have struck a chord with mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends the world over. They have taken the form of big bold letters on many a signpost, proudly held high by women protesting at countless marches over the past two years. They have spread through social-media posts, accompanied by viral hashtags like #MeToo and #NeverthelessShePersisted. And they have prompted women in the spotlight to use their celebrity status to encourage change.
Natalia Vodianova, Dakota Fanning and Nicole Kidman are the latest stars to take a stand. In Net-a-Porter’s new campaign, they are supporting Women for Women International, a non-profit organization that helps women survivors of war. Alongside six iconic designers including Stella McCartney, Rosie Assoulin, and Bella Freud, these celebrities are shining a light on the cause by wearing one of the T-shirts designed exclusively for International Women’s Day and sold on the luxury retail website.
Each design represents a personal interpretation of female bravery, with all profits going directly to Women for Women. Sure, it may be a small gesture, but the important thing is that it continues the narrative and encourages a conversation.
