Inside the Grand Palais in Paris, where Karl Lagerfeld routinely transforms the environment into an other-worldly experience, a humble French garden took form. Less ostentatious than previous efforts – which has seen the faithful reconstruction of everything from airport terminals to grocery stores – Chanel’s mood for Spring 2018 Couture was far more subdued.

A few months ago it was a rocket ship launching into air, but this time the wow-factor came from the clothes themselves, as Lagerfeld converted supermodels into flowers by way of lavish decorative elements. From shimmering petals, sheaves of minutely-layered ruffles, and magnificent appliqués, his French garden sprang to life.

Leading the show were Chanel’s colorful, thick tweed skirt suits, with their signature stiff, raised boatneck collars, boxy silhouettes, and rounded shoulders, complemented by matching ankle boots with a Perspex heel, as well as the occasional pair of fingerless gloves and veiled hat. Variations on the tweed theme came from coats trimmed with marabou feathers at the hem, sheath dresses with mid-waist pockets, and tweed suit jackets worn with matching walking shorts.

With so much ugly in the world, fashion offers an escape, and escapism abounded at Chanel’s show.

Other sartorial delights emerged in the form of romantic poet blouses, full skirts decorated with watercolor smears, coruscated crystal mini dresses, and breezy, pleated chiffon dresses in shades of kelly green, cobalt blue, and peony pink. It is also a mark of Chanel’s talented ateliers that all of the densely-beaded surfaces of the collection looked so effervescent and light.

With so much ugly in the world, fashion offers an escape, and escapism abounded at Chanel’s show. Forget collapsing ecosystems, unstable economies, violent revolts, and global gender disparity – within these manicured environs, the real world melted away. Winding through the garden was a traditional Chanel show, led by sophisticated tweeds and culminating in a grand wedding dress, but the familiar procession was no less exquisite.
