The way trends work is no longer cyclical. Whereas in the past, fashion’s output cycled through trends that were popular in ten- and 20-year cycles, the modern era has erased that process altogether. We’re no longer ruled by eras or hemlines, but by brands and influencers. What started out as cool micro trends in 2017 have gained steam for 2018, meaning several of the looks you might have seen on “It” girls are officially “in” right now.
Intentionally ugly sneakers, micro sunglasses, and berets are a few of the overarching accessory trends dominating the coming months, and retail has caught up with the latest Spring/Summer 2018 collections hitting the shelves. Find the brands to keep an eye out for and ideas on how to wear the trends in our round-up below.
Intentionally Ugy Sneakers
Whether you find them an affront to your sartorial sensibilities or appreciate their irony, there is simply no escaping the ugly sneaker trend. Primarily, you have Balenciaga to thank for that, but other brands have entered the fray with versions at Prada, Acne Studios, and even Nike.
We used to hide between sunglasses so huge that they eclipsed our entire faces, but the trend has now moved completely in the opposite direction. Now, you’re not cool unless you’re rocking seriously microscopic sunnies, preferably perched on the tip of your nose. Practical, they are not, but on trend? You bet.
Say what you will about the scrunchies, but they have definitely made a slow creep back into the fashion lexicon starting last year. They’re now a full-fledged trend thanks to their embrace by hip brands like Mansur Gavriel and Balenciaga as well as “It” girls like Bella Hadid.
Last year, it was sculptural earrings and single earrings that really stole the show, but this year’s statement makers are pure fun. Disco-inspired earrings featuring heavy strands of crystal, blinged-out exteriors, or actual disco balls are one of 2018’s most party-worthy accessory trends. The best versions that we’ve seen (so far) are those by Isabel Marant and Saint Laurent.
Old-School Logo Handbags
Logos were back in a major way in 2017, declaring your status and buying power loudly from the surfaces of bags, shoes, and clothes. In 2018, logomania has morphed, taking a page from the archives at major brands like Chanel and Fendi with a revived take on each house’s classic logo.
Fashion has been trying to distill French girl style to its essence for decades, but you can take home the look for a fraction of the effort by donning a simple beret. This ladylike accessory has become a fast favorite of the “It” crowd, thanks in part to Dior’s efforts.
Westernwear, in general, is a massive trend for 2018 thanks in large part to Americana revivals at houses like Calvin Klein. “It” girls are already snagging a piece of the trend – without going full cowgirl – by donning the classic concho belt.
Dramatic Pearl Jewelry
Dramatic pearl jewelry has reached a fever pitch for 2018, appearing on dozens of runways in countless forms. From layered necklaces at Gucci and massive swirl earrings at Y-Project to jumbo-sized pearl bracelets at Chanel, this trend is inescapable.
