Long gone are the days when sneakers were reserved solely for running. Today, the sporty shoe serves as one of the most important styles in a modern woman’s wardrobe, proving to be a reliable accessory for everything from dinners and date nights to meetings – in the right industry, of course.
This largely comes down to the rise in luxury fashion houses collaborating with sports brands and high-end labels adjusting their aesthetic to appeal to the casual tastes of the millennial consumer. For Spring/Summer 2018, almost every womenswear designer incorporated sneakers into their collection, but the likes of Louis Vuitton and Balenciaga made fashion headlines with their ultra-chunky, retro-inspired styles.
You’d be hard-pressed to find an Italian or French key fashion player that isn’t jumping on the athleisure bandwagon, but these are the styles we think you’ll be seeing a lot more of this year.
This year is all about the ugly shoe, but when it comes to the chunky sole, the Balenciaga ‘Triple S’ is undoubtedly the cream of the crop. The style serves as a wardrobe anchor for everyone who’s anyone, including the Victoria’s Secret Angels, “hypebaes”, and the street-style set. The jury is out on this one because, although they may look orthopaedic, they’re very much “of the moment”.
Golden Goose Deluxe Brand
The ‘Super Star’ has been a firm favorite amongst street-style stars for several seasons now, becoming the go-to choice for those who favor a luxury brand that doesn’t look too polished. Its signature distressed finish has the nostalgic appeal of tennis shoes that you’ve worn and loved for years, even when they’re fresh out the box. The best part? They come in metallic, glittered, and patterned colorways in addition to classic white.
When we said sneakers were going chunky for the season, we weren’t kidding. Probably the most niche style within this list, Acne’s ‘Sofiane’ takes mammoth soles to a whole new level. Featuring a textile-and-suede upper, this boldly colored sneaker was made to turn heads and push boundaries.
'Air Max '97'
This retro style was designed with a runner in mind, but today it’s possibly one of the most popular sneaker choices for fashion lovers. Its bold color options span from uber girly right through to futuristic, and the curved detailing creates a slimline illusion even though the sole definitely falls in the chunky category.
J.W. Anderson x Converse
All that glitters is this fabulous collaboration between a sneaker legend and one of London’s most forward-thinking designers. The ‘Glitter Gutter’, courtesy of J.W. Anderson and Converse, immediately caught the eye of sparkle-loving cool girls when it launched in December. Expect some pretty memorable street-style appearances during February’s Fashion Weeks.
Eytys took the trail shoe and turned it on its head to create ‘The Angel’. This sneaker boasts heavy-duty details, including D-ring laces and an elevated lug sole, and is guaranteed to be a hit with grunge-loving girls.
A little less “out there” than some of the other styles on this list, Alexander McQueen’s sneaker has also adopted the hefty sole but keeps the rest of its design pretty slick. The all-white shoe offers a pop of color in its bright heel, which ranges from neon pink through to royal blue. We’re betting this shoe will be worn by the girlier members of the fash pack.
