It came as something of a surprise when Karl Lagerfeld – reputed as one of the fashion universe’s most forward-looking individuals – picked ancient Greece as a starting point for his Chanel Cruise 2018 collection. The designer rarely looks to the past for inspiration, but this time around, it made for a compelling backstory.
In this interview, Lagerfeld relates the origin of his collection, recalling a time in history when clothes were easy and uncontrived, meant to flow with and reveal the body instead of covering it up. For that reason, Chanel’s typically stiff tweeds were rendered in soft and agile form for a variety of minidresses, while elegant draping and gathering echoed stately Grecian silhouettes from eras past.
While inherently modern in form and execution, Chanel Cruise 2018 is still a window to another world, an ancient time when the human body was celebrated and uplifted with elaborate Greek sculptures and when femininity was wedded with the divine.
