Kaia Gerber – the genetically blessed offspring of one of history’s most recognizable supermodels – might not share Cindy Crawford’s famous last name nor that iconic beauty mark, but she is still on her way to eclipsing her mother’s career. The 90s supermodel has certainly passed on her remarkable good looks to Gerber, but she has also instilled in her a passion for modeling. In fact, it’s safe to say that a modeling career was in her destiny all along.
We’ve called the 16-year-old model “one to watch” for over a year now, and, this season at Fashion Month, our prediction was proven right. Her career exploded, seemingly overnight, and eerily parallels the success of another “It” girl of the moment: Kendall Jenner. In fact, out of the crop of “Insta-famous” models taking the fashion world by storm, Gerber is poised to accelerate right past peers like Hailey Baldwin, Gigi Hadid, and Bella Hadid. Here’s why we think she’s the next big thing.
She has a Famous Family
There is no escaping the fact that the current generation of supermodels shares one giant privilege: they all come from famous families. Hailey Baldwin’s father is actor Stephen Baldwin, and Gigi and Bella Hadid grew up in front of a television audience on The Real Housewives of Orange County. It is Jenner, however, who has been in front of the public eye the longest and comes from Hollywood dynasty: the Jenner-Kardashian clan. Like her model peers, Gerber has a famous mother. However, her mother is modeling royalty, which gives her an edge when it comes to the competition.
She's BFFs with Her Mom
It’s a well-documented fact that the Jenner-Kardashian clan are close to their matriarch, Kris Jenner. In fact, she manages their careers on top of juggling motherhood. Kendall and Kris are very close, as is evidenced by their relationship on Keeping Up with the Kardashians. However, Gerber and her mother are practically inseparable. They dress up in complementary costumes for Halloween , do spa days together, and refer to each other as “best friends” on social media. Gerber also frequently dons a hoodie with her mother’s likeness on the back, speaking to their deep and abiding connection.
Her First Season of Model Bookings was Stunning
Jenner had a leg-up when it came to booking her first modeling gigs, as her brother-in-law Kanye West assisted in putting her in touch with the right agents. She booked her first gig in 2012 walking for Sherri Hill, but it was the Marc Jacobs Fall/Winter 2014 show that really put her on the map.
Gerber, however, has had a much more auspicious start to her career. Her first gig ever was modeling for Young Versace at the age of ten, and she appeared in the pages of major fashion magazines before ever booking a runway show. Her first catwalk appearance began at Calvin Klein for Spring/Summer 2018, which is a huge honor out of the gate, but then she ratcheted up the accolades by appearing in 18 shows that same season for legendary brands like Chanel and Miu Miu.
She has a Cool Sense of Off-Duty Style
Jenner’s off-duty style has fluctuated over the years, especially as of late, but Gerber’s aesthetic is already well-honed. She definitely taps into the 90s nostalgia vein with throwback accents such as combat boots and plaid trousers, rounding off her looks with touches of tomboy and military style. However, when she wants to get racy, she rocks bodycon minidresses like no other.
