Most women have one piece in their wardrobes that feels almost too special to use. And if you own a clutch by Nathalie Trad, you can relate as you’re probably still deciding whether you should carry it or place it on a shelf to admire from afar.
Each handmade collection from Trad is more special than the last, and her new Christmas capsule collection is no exception. Named after the world’s biggest explosion of stars, Supernova is a celebration of a hugely unexplored world’s most beautiful parts. Every bag tells its own individual story, but the narrative throughout is the beauty of winter, and how the dark night’s sky is the perfect canvas for those twinkly stars.
From concept to final piece, the process of creating a Nathalie Trad clutch is a complex one: two weeks of molding, curing, preparing, and inlaying take place before the finishing touches are added by masterful artisans. This collection is made with a combination of particularly distinctive shells, including mother-of-pearl, paua blue, and black lip to create a final piece that is truly unique. The shells used are meticulously sourced from all over the Far East region, which Trad considers a treasure trove of exquisite materials.
To get accessory aficionados in the holiday spirit, Savoir Flair sits down with Nathalie Trad to discuss her Christmas capsule collection before exclusively unveiling it in its entirety, below.
Can you tell us what made you create a collection specifically for Christmas?
Christmas is a magical time of the year, and I wanted to create a collection that reflects the magic I feel when it comes around. It’s a time for celebration and plenty of festivities – the perfect opportunity to carry a clutch!
What does Christmas mean to you, and how do you usually spend it?
For me, this special time represents happiness, family, friendship, peace, and love above all. I have always spent Christmas with my family and closest friends at home enjoying dinner, singing Christmas carols, and ending the night with a game of gift grab.
Your collection is named Supernova. Do you take an interest in astronomy yourself?
Supernova is the largest explosion that takes place in space; it is the explosion of stars that sounds incredibly captivating. I do find the world of astronomy fascinating, and I would love to take the time to learn more about it and our universe in general.
What is it about astronomy and Christmas that, to you, have a synergy?
There’s something about looking up at a starry sky on a crisp winter’s night that evokes a sense of wonder, stirs my imagination, and sparks a connection to something greater than ourselves.
Do you have a favorite star or constellation?
My favorite constellation is Orion, as that was the first constellation I discovered as a curious child looking up into the sky.
Where is your favorite place to stargaze?
Living in a highly lit-up city like Dubai means that we do not get to see starry skies very often. My favorite place to stargaze would have to be in the middle of the desert, far from civilization.
Speaking of stars, you’re a big hit amongst celebrities. Who were you most thrilled to see wearing your designs?
It’s always an absolute honor to see inspiring women wear our pieces and support our journey, no matter who they are!
Can you tell us what to expect from your brand in 2018?
We have lots of exciting projects brewing, which we cannot wait to reveal in due course. In the meantime, you will find that our next collection is a great new departure for the brand – it’s bursting with new shapes, color, fun, and positivity.
