If you’ve ever wondered just how influential streetwear has become on high-end fashion brands, look no further than Louis Vuitton. After a record-breaking collaboration with skate company Supreme, Louis Vuitton redoubled its focus on street themes for Spring/Summer 2018 with some surprising, anachronistic twists.

Just when things at Fashion Week were beginning to feel stale, Ghesquière reminds us of the tacit intrigue of experimentation.

As surprising as it was to see a succession of court coats and sneakers paired together on the runway, the lightness and elegant movement of Ghesquière’s expertly tailored toppers in motion underscored a sportif attitude. It seems like only he could pull off such a feat. Strong striped looks were outliers amid a parade of elegant poet’s blouses and leather shorts, but their graphic boldness left a good impression by helping to tether translucent, floaty fabrics. So did glossy leather tabards and embroidered bustier layers with ruffled sleeves, which were worn over feminine, chiffon layers. Glittery slips and metallic trousers closed the show on an eye-catching note.

While some creative directors at other major houses appear to be stuck in a rut, Nicolas Ghesquière embraced the unusual pairing of elaborate brocade frock coats – which could have come straight from pre-revolutionary French courts – with silk boxer shorts and collectible footwear. Indeed, this collection was anything but predictable – case in point: the inclusion of one solitary Stranger Things tee. Just when things at Fashion Week were beginning to feel stale, Ghesquière reminds us of the tacit intrigue of experimentation.
