Although Hermès’ ready-to-wear category is by no means the most lucrative for the expansive luxury brand, it has seen steady growth of late. For that reason, we expected renewed focus on ready-to-wear for Spring/Summer 2018 by designer Nadège Vanhée-Cybulski. Her elegant leather looks and footwear have been a smashing success for Hermès and, as predicted, she doubled down on their saleability this season with dozens of handsome leather separates mixed in with smart tartan pieces and cozy knitwear.

Critics who complain about the simplicity of Vanhée-Cybulski’s work – she cut her teeth at Margiela, Céline, and The Row, by the way – are completely missing how rich her fabrications are and how elegant her draping really is. When it comes to extreme luxury, there’s no need for more Balmain excess for one simple reason: really wealthy people, the kind that drop serious money on an entire Hermès season, for instance, don’t want to broadcast their bank accounts. Instead, discretion is preferred, and that is what Vanhée-Cybulski delivers in spades. A breezy mixed-plaid frock, a sporty striped pinafore, an elegant leather blouse – these are the wardrobe pieces that make a subtle statement. No logos or bling necessary.
