Multiple sneak previews of the collection posted to Instagram by the brand had us impatient to see the full Alexander McQueen show for Spring/Summer 2018, and it did not disappoint (it never does, actually). What started out as clues in the form of close-up flowers and filmy ponds dotted with lily pads blossomed into head-to-toe bouquets of striking, regal beauty on the runway – the English countryside reclaimed from old magic. Indeed, recycled ball gowns, or “treasures” as designer Sarah Burton named them, were exploded and reworked into magnificent, couture-level looks.

The English countryside was reclaimed from old magic.

Before we were introduced to Burton’s spectacular blossoms, the designer showed a mesmerizing series of youthful ruffled minis paired with artisanal combat boots, stunning deconstructed trenches (take note, Demna), luxurious padded coats, edgy off-shoulder gowns sculpted from leather, zip-away sweaters upholstered with appliqués, and gorgeous tartan frocks. The energy, high-octane glamour, and originality of her creations zipped by too quickly on the runway – their finery certainly demanded a closer look.

The flattened rivulets of hair, which were pulled down onto the models’ faces, were strange for strange’s sake, but at least they made sense when considered against the collection’s experimental milieu. At the finale, an English garden arrived, in sartorial form, complete with lifelike flower replicas impressed onto delicate sheer dresses, which featured deconstructed corset details. Even combat boots and weird hair couldn’t take away from the tremendous beauty of these spectacular gowns.
