Talk about a feast for the eyes. The Dolce & Gabbana Spring/Summer 2018 show designed by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana was a special one. Comprised of 100 looks, each millennial model took a starring role in the production, accompanied by what can only be described as a treasure trove of jewelry, bags, and accessories.
The Queen of Hearts show theme set the precedent for what was to follow: a long list of opulent, gluttonous, and utterly indulgent slices of fashion. And it wasn’t just playing cards that featured; literally everything you’d find at a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party was on the menu. Cakes, flowers, fruits, vegetables, and crowns all had a role in the accessories collection, and the results were a perfect marriage between two Italian passions: food and fashion.
Let them eat cake.
If you’ve got a sweet tooth, the SS18 accessories are going to tickle your taste buds and please your eyes. All the ingredients that make up a stellar tea party were there – think: mini pastries, cream-filled cannolis, and fruit tarts adorning earrings, bags, necklaces, and even clothing alike.
Bouquets and Blooms
Ring a ring o' roses.
Spring had officially sprung at this show, and gorgeous flowers filled the air with every model who stomped the runway. Mini roses in blush pink, pale yellow, and deep red were particularly popular on earrings, while real-bloom headpieces sat prettily on neat hair and alongside crowns.
Fit For a Queen
The crowning glory.
A Dolce & Gabbana show wouldn’t really be a Dolce & Gabbana show if crowns weren’t involved and, this season, they were more decadent than ever before. Piled high, the gold pieces were intricately bejeweled with red and royal blue stones or layered in pearls and delicate florals.
Sunglasses, but not as you know them.
When it comes to the sunglasses presented, the crazier (and more impractical), the better. Some were more costume- or festival-appropriate than others, and each pair seemed to be wackier than what walked before. The rectangular frames of manicured hands aren’t likely to fly off the shelves, but the 60s-inspired floral frames are equal parts garish and gorgeous.
Food for Thought
I'll take you to the grocery shop.
If we were to list the groceries referenced on the runway, you wouldn’t be blamed for mistaking it as your weekly shopping list. Fruits and vegetables were in abundance, with just about every emoji from the food section of your phone keyboard making an appearance. Mini carrots and huge strawberries served as earrings, while oranges played a leading role on necklaces and checked shopper bags.
Carry on Cool
Bags of embellished fun.
Possibly the only accessories that weren’t totally off the wall at this show were the handbags. With details like metallic quilting and glitter logos, the vast and varied array offered something for all types of collectors. We even spotted one shaped like a velvet table lamp, complete with gold tassels. Our editor’s pick has to be the leather trunk box that resembles a mini suitcase and is finished with a gold-heart padlock.
