By now it’s highly likely you’ve seen the incredible finale of the Versace Spring/Summer 2018 show on Instagram, from every conceivable angle. The moment was clearly an homage to Gianni Versace’s absolutely epic Fall/Winter 1991 show, where four of the Big 5 supermodels – Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, and Christy Turlington closed the show in spectacular fashion, while singing along to George Michael’s song “Freedom! ‘90”. Fast forward two decades and the moment is still as iconic, but this time around it featured Carla Bruni, Claudia Schiffer, Campbell, Crawford, and Helena Christensen clad in sinewy floor-length silver gowns.

But it wasn’t just the supermodel star power that drove fashion critics to announce this as one of the best fashion shows they’ve ever seen. Twenty years after the horrific murder of Gianni in his Miami home, the legacy he left behind is stronger than ever. While pop culture is focused on the anniversary of his death, Donatella Versace is focused on his life and the incredible contributions he made to the field of fashion. She shares his feminist vision of invisible women, and likewise works to put female power front and center in every collection.

What is astonishing is just how well Gianni’s original ideas held up, but we have Donatella to thank for a more streamlined, lithe silhouette.

For this incredible tribute collection, Donatella reached way back into Gianni’s archives and reproduced 12 prints from a broad range of his past work: Icons, Andy Warhol, Tresor de la Mer, Metal Mesh, Vogue, My Friend Elton, Wild Baroque, Anomalies, and Native American – collections that uniquely exemplified Gianni’s grasp of fashion folklore – were vibrantly revived for Spring/Summer 2018. What is astonishing is just how well Gianni’s original ideas held up, but we have Donatella to thank for a more streamlined, lithe silhouette.

It was touching to see the common cause between the Versace siblings, and the tremendous care Donatella has put into keeping the house codes while adding her own enhancements. It is even more moving when one sees just how confident the Versace woman looks in the combination of familial ideals. There have been many rumors surrounding Donatella’s potential departure from Versace, and if this is her swan song, she could not possibly leave on a more incredible note.
