A stroll around the manicured quays surrounding  the luxury hotel Splendido in Portofino exemplifies why the Italian Riviera attracts so many celebrities and socialites to its shore during the summer months. There, you can watch a lazy gondola drift by – perhaps carrying Jay-Z and Beyoncé or George and Amal Clooney – or pay a visit to the outrageously expensive waterfront cafés. Everything around you exudes luxury, and it is this essence that Tod’s attempts to distill for Spring/Summer 2018.

Hailing from the “planet of glamour” that is Italy and its many resort towns and quaint villages, the luxury brand crafted a travel-ready wardrobe for the Italophile done in a tremendous array of leather and cowhide.

As a brand famed for its high-quality leather, it was no surprise to see so much of it on the Tod’s runway, but it was a surprise to see it on unexpected items like hoodies, pajamas (!), and parkas. The unfortunate problem of so much heavy animal skin is that many women would never wear leather shorts and a suede top in the dead heat of summer, the season for which the collection is made. Gentler fabrications and lightweight nylons found on lace-up tunics, romantic blouses, and all-weather jackets made a much better pitch for the summer season, however.

Tod’s ready-to-wear category has been struggling to connect with women who already find much the same luxury resort-ready clothes from other brands, but its accessories are still the main attraction.

Tod’s ready-to-wear category has been struggling to connect with women who already find much the same luxury resort-ready clothes from other brands, but its accessories are still the main attraction. This time around, Tod’s ‘Gommino’ loafers were trimmed with leather fringe, slim sandals were decorated with flirty scarf attachments, and the ‘Sella’ bag was upholstered with snakeskin and extra straps.

Some of the lighter skirts made from techno nylon, ombré summer dresses, and silk-screened blouses will entice better than the leather-on-leather looks. Imagine yourself strolling the quays again, this time in that little white mesh dress and some glamorous accessories. In a look that breezy and effortlessly luxurious, you’d fit right in.
