We’re living in the golden age of television, during which the production, storytelling, casting, and scores have never been more intriguing, mind-bending, or captivating. The annual celebration of TV’s best and brightest, the Primetime Emmy Awards, got underway on Sunday evening for the 2017 season.
Host Stephen Colbert kept the political jabs streaming in, but we were living for squad moments between the glamorous cast of Big Little Lies and the kids from cult favorite Stranger Things. And was it our imagination or was the air between Feud co-stars Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon a bit frosty? Just kidding – the two are obviously good friends. However, the fact that they were both up for Emmys ironically parallels the rivalry between silver-screen stars Joan Crawford and Bette Davis, whom they played in the show. Meanwhile, fan favorites like Big Little Lies, Veep, and The Handmaid’s Tale swept the Emmys in multiple categories.
On the red carpet, we noticed flashbacks to the recently passed New York Fashion Week. Leslie Jones, who made a viral splash at the Christian Siriano runway show, wore the designer for her nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. We also spotted a few Middle Eastern designers like Elie Saab alongside feminist fashionado favorites like Prabal Gurung, Dior, and Ana-Katarina Jewelry.
Oh, and we need to take a moment to acknowledge the hot-pink, jaw-dropping dress that Jane Fonda wore. At nearly 80 years old, she is literally older than the awards ceremony itself, but doesn’t look a day over 50. How? We’re in awe. Tell us your secrets, Jane! While gown styles generally erred on the timeless side, there were plenty of fairytale looks to fall in love with.
