When it comes to investing in new-season goodness, you may be reluctant to spend your hard-earned dirhams on trends, especially if you’re not sure of their staying power and style longevity. However, if you’re looking for a slice of fall/winter that isn’t going to make you cringe in a year’s time, an investment bag is definitely the way to go.
For 2017, many designers added new bag shapes to their collections, while others opted for fun updates to old classics. Fendi brought its bags into the new season by updating its iconic logo, while Gucci took the popular ‘Marmont’ and made it millennial-friendly. Whether you’re into timeless shapes that you can wear every day or novelty pieces for once in a while, Savoir Flair rounds up the best new-season bags you’re guaranteed to see more of in the gallery below.
Chloé 'Pixie' Bag
When it comes to “It” bags, Chloé has occupied the number one spot since the fashion house’s bag debut in 2002. Its new style for FW17, the ‘Pixie’ bag promises to be no exception. It comes in ten rich colors, including saffron red, pearl beige, and mustard brown, so expect to see a lot more of this shape over the next month.
Proenza Schouler 'Hobo' Bag
Debuted on the Fall/Winter 2017 runway, Proenza Schouler’s new ‘Hobo’ bag approaches everyday dressing in a cool, contemporary way. The supersize shape means it’s the only bag you’ll need — whether you’re hitting the gym, carrying your laptop, or heading to meetings.
Roksanda 'Dia' Bag
Circular handbag shapes and round hardware details have been popular amongst “It” girls for quite some time now, but Roksanda’s FW17 show took these popular details and used them to create some truly innovative bag shapes. New for fall, the ‘Dia’ bag is a feast for the eyes. Its classic tan color, paired with large gold rings and a red knotted strap, is guaranteed to be a big hit this Fashion Week.
Prada 'Cartoon' Bag
The perfect option for the girl who likes to experiment with fashion, Prada‘s new ‘Cartoon’ shape uses velvet fabric and printed graphics in bold colors to create an illusion of gold hardware. We can imagine Anna Dello Russo or Chiara Ferragni favoring this one on the streets of Milan.
Off-White 'Sculpture' Tote
Off-White has a way of tapping into millennial sub-culture that not many luxury brands can, and Virgil Abloh’s high-low approach to fashion makes for a street-style sensation. The designer explained how he sees each bag he creates as a “work of art”, and this is shown through the reference to “sculpture” printed on this simple leather shape.
Miu Miu 'My Miu' Bag
Miu Miu has taken a step in a totally different direction with its ‘My Miu’ bag. For the first time ever, the label uses its logo in a big way across its clutch bags in the form of large metal clasps and lettering, making for a totally fun take on classic ladylike dressing. This is by far the brand’s biggest hero accessory for the season.
Jacquemus 'Le Petit Rond' Bag
Who says handbags should fit your belongings in them? While this new style from Jacquemus may not be the most practical, it’s the perfect addition to a bag-collector’s closet. This is truly a case of “the heart wants what it wants”.
Gucci GG 'Marmont' Belt Bag
Although not the most traditional bag shape, the fanny pack has been having a moment this year, led by none other than this luxuriously quilted Gucci style. The ‘Marmont’ shape has become a new signature for lovers of the brand, but the introduction of the belt bag has also been a hit amongst a new audience of streetwear-loving millennials who have taken to wearing the style across the chest.
Fendi 'Kan I' Bag
Fall/Winter 2017 saw Italian fashion house Fendi debut its brand new logo – and it is beautiful. The ‘reversed F’ was placed on a wide range of new and old bag styles, but this elegant top-handle ‘Kan I’ is definitely worth investing in. A modern classic, we can imagine this being a sought-after vintage piece in years to come.
Christian Dior 'Dio(R)evolution' Bag
There has not been a single movie premiere, fashion party, award ceremony, or street style shot in 2017 without a Dior look or hero accessory in shot. By far the most well-received collection of the season, it featured the addition of this must-have bag shape, which works as either a clutch or a cross-body bag. This one is worth every penny.
Balenciaga 'Retroviseur' Bag
Clutch bags were a popular style on the FW17 runways, especially at the Balenciaga show. The ‘Retroviseur’ (which literally means rear-view mirror) is the novelty bag of the season. The hard-case box bag comes in bold red, simple white, or classic black, complete with a long detachable handle and mirror, of course.
Bottega Veneta 'Lauren 1980' Bag
In celebration of its 50th anniversary, Bottega Veneta has re-released the iconic bag style worn by Lauren Hutton in the 1980s hit movie American Gigolo. The clutch bag — which features the brand’s distinctive intrecciato leather weave — has been renamed the ‘Lauren 1980’ for FW17 and comes in seven colors, including classic red. This is a true classic.
