We’re not quite sure if we owe it to 90s counterculture, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or popstars circa 2004, but having just one hole in each ear doesn’t quite cut it anymore. Once favored by grungy teenagers, multiple ear piercings are now a look championed by models, celebrities, and trend-aware girls all over the world. One particular brand, however, is taking ear adornment to the next level. Meet The Last Line.
Why wear one earring when you could wear ten?
The concept is simple; it was created to cater to every girl who has ever experienced that incessant need to locate the perfect jewelry item, only to find that it exists solely in her head. Founder Shelley Gibbs Sanders totally gets that girl, and her LA-born brand is helping her call off the search. The veteran jeweler and “ear game” curator boasts 20 years in the high-jewelry business, including time as a diamond concierge for a select few.
This time, however, she’s using her well-honed skills to produce stunning 14-karat gold, diamond, and precious-stone pieces made for anyone who has ever believed in being extra with their accessorizing – but without a hefty price tag. The Last Line’s blink-and-you’ll-miss-them new releases come fast and unexpectedly, each adding more unique pieces that you won’t find anywhere else.
The brand’s collections focus on “the heart” (think: staples like spherical studs and diamond hoops that you’d never take off) and “the soul” (jaw-dropping pieces destined to end up as future heirlooms). However, there’s no such thing as a hero piece here, because why wear one earring when you could wear ten? The pieces provide endless combination options as they’re designed to be mixed, matched, stacked, and layered to create the perfect “ear game” as advocated by LA’s cool crew, including Rachel Zoe, Nicole Richie, and Jen Atkin, as well as Sanders herself, who has a cool 13 piercings.
Speaking exclusively to Savoir Flair, Shelley Gibbs Sanders reveals exactly how she styles her piercings and some never-before-heard secrets about her brand. Browse through the gallery, below, to find out more and shop The Last Line by clicking here.
She's serious about strong "ear game".
“For me, it’s how women mix their jewelry that makes it cool. You and I may buy a few of the same pieces – because great minds think alike – but ultimately style them completely differently. That’s just one of the things I love about the line.”
She believes in mixing things up.
“I don’t have a guide to styling, but I like to mix and match proportions. When I’m styling my own piercings, I love a large-to-small graduation on some days. Other days, I may start with a statement earring in a traditional piercing with tiny diamond sparklers in the other piercings.”
When getting pierced, Sanders considers the ear first.
“When it comes to getting a piercing, you need to look at the anatomy of your ear and what highlights it best. One of the most important things outside of its location is how you plan to style it, particularly if you have a specific vision in mind. I like the idea of graduated piercings starting from the traditional and gradually working their way up the ear. Of course, I also love the idea of non-traditional piercings and just cartilage or upper-ear piercings. The unexpected is always welcome!”
Her pieces hold sentimental value.
“In this drop, the flower and dew-drop earrings are my favorites. Coming up in the bracelet collection, there is a rainbow tennis series that is special to me because it was designed after a string friendship bracelet that my husband, my children, and I all wear.”
She's all about fashionable but timeless pieces.
“I want our pieces to become heirlooms – they should feel current, but not trendy. The flower collection from our first drop has been insanely popular. I think those pieces are great because they’re a bit whimsical but truly beautiful. Everyone who puts them on is immediately hooked. I hope they’re just one of the pieces you end up wearing! The rainbow series has also been a hit. I think women are finding it refreshing to see new styles in bright colors.”
She has quite the celebrity following, but she's all about keeping it real.
“I made a custom earring for Miley Cyrus, which was very exciting, but honestly, I’m waiting for the moment when I see someone on the street wearing The Last Line,” says Sanders. “My girlfriends have been so supportive and, for that, I am so grateful as many of them were my inspiration for the brand.”
There's more than just ears in store for The Last Line.
“We will be launching new pieces when you least expect it. We are beginning with earrings (two more drops are expected shortly), then will launch the additional categories: necklaces, bracelets, and rings over the next few months. The goal is for the customer to always look forward to what’s next, so stay tuned ladies!”
