A self-proclaimed “stylish mama in her 50s”, Eman Bani Hashim is laughing in the face of every age and fashion stereotype you’ve ever heard. Inspired by the timeless glamour of Audrey Hepburn, she is not one to live by the rules when it comes to dressing – for her, any outfit is possible when styled correctly. A government official by day and a lover of trends by night, this Emirati mom of two may just change the influencer game as we know it.
If her last name sounds familiar, that’s probably because you’ve come across the work of one of her daughters. Alamira Noor Bani Hashim is behind No.FiftySeven Boutique Café and the region’s most exclusive dinner event, The Dinner Club by No.57, while Alamira Reem Bani Hashim is lending her bohemian touch to homes and restaurants around the country as one half of The Native Bohemians. Talk about getting it from your mama.
You only have to look at her Instagram account to see that she’s all about the details. From strategically knotted belts and layered necklaces to mismatched earrings and incredible handbags, standout accessories paired with clever styling tricks are the key to always looking polished for Bani Hashim. It’s very rare that you’ll find her wearing a piece conventionally and, although you may have some of the same high-street items as she does, you probably haven’t thought of wearing them the same way.
Besides her age, it’s her individuality and penchant for customization that really sets her apart. Talking exclusively to Savoir Flair about maintaining great style at any age, Eman Bani Hashim shares her fashion secrets in the gallery, below.
For her, style knows no age.
When asked about starting her Instagram account, Bani Hashim says, “I wanted to show that you can be stylish no matter how old you are. I also wanted to stress the fact that you don’t have to wear brands from head to toe. You can stylishly mix and match luxury and high-street brands.”
She's particular about portraying her signature style.
“It’s very simple, but at the same time, I pay attention to details,” she explains. “I’m not a big fan of bright colors. I like nudes, grays, and browns. Plus, I always like to add a personal touch to anything I wear, whether it’s a statement accessory or a slight change in the silhouette by adding some fabric or embellishment here and there.”
She's serious about trends.
“I always keep an eye on everything new,” says Bani Hashim when talking about staying up to date with the latest trends. “I go to malls, do a lot of window-shopping, watch fashion shows, and read fashion magazines.”
She has a few style rules.
“I like to own classic pieces that will never go out of fashion,” explains Bani Hashim. “I have pieces that I might have bought ten years ago and can still wear today, with some changes. I also respect my age and never wear anything too revealing, for example.”
She's had a lifelong love for fashion.
Discussing her passion for style, she explains, “I’ve always been interested in fashion. I even have some old pictures of myself wearing the same trends that I could wear now.”
She's not afraid to share her wisdom.
“I was once shopping in a store and found a woman trying on different outfits for a garden wedding. I didn’t feel any of the looks that she had picked were appropriate for the occasion, so I stepped in and gave her my advice. She loved the outfit I picked for her and was very grateful for the help. She happily bought the dress I chose for her in the end,” recalls Bani Hashim.
For her, individuality is key.
“I like to add my personal touch to everything. Last Ramadan, for example, I went to an abaya pop-up exhibition. I bought one of the simplest abayas but then added my personal touches. A few days later, I returned to the pop-up wearing it. Women stopped to see what I had done and put in requests for the same piece, with my customizations added.”
