Early on, most of us learn the hard way that cacti are not to be messed with. After all, those spiky desert blooms are equipped with some seriously protective adaptations to keep predators at spines’ length. In light of cacti’s don’t-touch-me characteristics, it came as something of a surprise last year when high-end luxury jewelry brand Cartier announced that it would use the thorny specimen as inspiration for a seriously stunning collection called ‘Cactus de Cartier’.
Turning the untouchable into the supremely covetable, Cartier used the familiar tubular and rounded shapes and bumpy textures of the cacti family as a blueprint for a silhouette that was both unique and instantly recognizable. Soaked in inspiration from nature, Cartier’s astonishing versions were spun from yellow and white gold, emeralds, brilliant-cut diamonds, carnelians, and lapis lazuli. For those seeking to iron out a unique sartorial identity, ‘Cactus de Cartier’ achieved a nontraditional but highly alluring profile.
Fast forward to 2017 and the brand has just unveiled a series of new additions to the collection, which you can preview exclusively on Savoir Flair in the gallery below. Updates to the release include a series of structured bags in either emerald green or crocodile skin tanned with 24k gold dust and cactus-brooch clasps.
