Elie Saab's spectacular couture presentation pays homage to queens both medieval and modern.

Behind every great king is a great queen, but what if the king fails? Then, all that is left is the queen. In Elie Saab’s spectacular Fall 2017 Couture show, the theme, ‘A Tale of Fallen Kings’, envisions such a world – one where women rule. Clearly, someone has been binging on Game of Thrones episodes.

Since the women of Westeros are so archetypally representative of medieval rulers, it was easy to play “match the look” as the presentation progressed. To Cersei go the dark, velvety, and vaguely threatening looks covered in the filigreed gold that is the Lannister signature, and to the innocent Sansa go the pastel, shimmering dresses and sheer, embroidered robes. Finally, it is the mightiest of them all – Daenerys, Mother of Dragons – who lays claim to the smoldering red gowns.

Clearly, someone has been binging on Game of Thrones episodes.

What kind of queen do you want to be? A medieval warrior princess? A generous queen-mother? A valiant virgin of the vale? A cold-hearted ruler supreme? From medieval to modern, Saab had a couture creation for every type.

It goes without saying that a collection of finery fit for a queen would come in every jewel tone imaginable. Thus, the show was packed with enticing, vibrant shades of royal blue, serene emerald, and ruby red – enhanced with metallic elements in contrast. Each gown bore Saab’s signature embellishment, from wispy feathers and the slow creep of sequined vines to lavish embroidered paillettes. His astonishing range of red-carpet couture looks – and their accompanying robes and fur stoles – will no doubt make celebrities (arguably the modern equivalent of royalty) very happy. The rest of us are thrilled just to glimpse an eyeful of Saab’s regal garb.
