Lebanese couturier Zuhair Murad pays tribute to the Gibson girl with looks that exemplify the feminine ideal.

Like the drawings that inspired his Fall 2017 Couture collection, Lebanese couturier Zuhair Murad is obsessed with personifying the feminine ideal. The late 19th and early 20th century “Gibson Girl”, created by illustrator Charles Dana Gibson, outlined in black and white how women should look and was crafted by a composite of “thousands of American girls”. Taking a page from the Gibson guidelines of women who were both “fragile” and “voluptuous”, Murad combined his signature nude-effect gowns with otherworldly construction and jaw-dropping embellishment for a collection that radiated glamour.

The feathery crochet number that opened the show was stunning enough to have been the closer, but that’s a Murad collection for you – each look more extravagant and fantastical than the one before.

This added up to a pretty overwhelming display of crystal-embroidered naked gowns, slinky cocktail dresses, embellished tea frocks, and sheer pencil dresses. There were even a few pantsuits in the mix to provide a contrary purview of femininity, but naturally these were rendered in velvet, accompanied by crystal-encrusted capes, or trimmed with feathers. For all of their magnificent construction and dense embellishment, Murad insists that his looks were lightweight, which is amazing news for the A-listers who will no doubt flock to this collection for their red-carpet needs.
