Late last night, while double-tapping my way through @everyoutfitonsatc (if you don’t know, get to know) and wondering if Virgin Mobile really was the new Etisalat, I got to thinking… If Carrie Bradshaw were skipping around Greenwich Village today, what would she be wearing? Cue: Prada x MyTheresa.com.
Assuming Bradshaw would have made the 21st century voyage into online shopping, we imagine her setting an iPhone reminder for today’s date, a.k.a. the launch of the capsule collection that is the result of a collaboration between luxury online retailer MyTheresa.com and Italian fashion house Prada. The 29-piece collection has a subtle 60s influence, following a narrative similar to that of the Pre-Fall 2017 show but adapted cleverly for the exclusive collaboration. The offering uses lighter and brighter color combinations, bolder prints, and lighter fabrics, all whilst featuring the quintessentially Prada nipped-in waists and midi-length skirts.
The collection is a balanced mix of old and new; modern pieces are juxtaposed with prints and finishes that feel retro. It wouldn’t come as a surprise if somewhere in the Sex and the City archives were marabou-feathered cuffs and delicate floral patterns contrasted against Chinatown’s Lower East Side backdrop. And as for the A-line belted midi dress? It’s the perfect outfit for brunch at The Loeb Boathouse in Central Park – although we’re not so sure it would withstand a fall in the lake with Mr Big.
Every piece has a vintage feel, and the nostalgic thought of an Upper East Side grandmother donning her finest really draws you in. However, the hero pieces – and arguably the most Bradshaw-esque – are the accessories. Cerise and turquoise satin (which, quite frankly, are the most Carrie thing we’ve seen since belts worn over bare midriffs) cover super-pointy flats and kitten heels, both finished with (of course) more feathers.
Leather gloves in bold red and bottle green are beaded in contrasting tones, completely ignoring the “less is more” philosophy because, let’s face it, Prada maximalism is the exception to the rule. As Carrie would profoundly say, “It wasn’t logic. It was love.”
