East met West on the Ralph & Russo stage for Fall 2017 Couture in a show that celebrated showgirls, the salwar kameez, military uniforms, and other disparate elements. The brand’s typical wow-factor was in overdrive this season, replete with towering headgear and see-through, knee-high boots. Each magnificently constructed dress and gown intensified the glamour that Ralph & Russo is known for, underscored by the collection’s many glittering surfaces and billowing capes.

To cement the relationship between East and West, one of Bollywood’s highest-paid actresses, Sonam Kapoor, walked the runway.

The flashy show was off to the races with an opening all-white look that dripped with embellishment, followed by tweed suit separates, paillette-encrusted evening dresses, and tinseled majorette frocks. Of the many decadent fabrications and decorations available in the collection, fringe, feathers, and tinsel played a major supporting role. Ralph & Russo even did one look that combined all three elements; a tinseled fringe dress embedded with feathers embraced bold texture. Meanwhile, an ivory floor-length tunic with a halter neck and split front worn with matching loose trousers represented a modern update on the salwar kameez.

For those who prefer understated elegance, there was a spectacularly slinky black gown with a plunging neckline filled with decorative crystal beading that resembled a lavish necklace. For the attention-seeker, there were glittering gold mini dresses, champagne-colored draped gowns, massive ombré tiered tulle gowns, and more. There were showgirl dresses that exploded with crystal beading and other looks that borrowed elements from military uniforms, like marching rows of gold buttons on high-waisted trousers, and band uniforms, like tall feathered hats.

To cement the relationship between East and West, one of Bollywood’s highest-paid actresses, Sonam Kapoor, walked the runway like a regal queen in the brand’s closing look – a wedding gown so impressively decorated as to warrant its own insurance policy.
