It’s not very often that residents of the UAE are the first to get wind of and access to a new “It” label, so when we started to see the likes of Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and Karen Wazen sporting a new brand of sunglasses back in February, we did a victory dance for the Dubai-born label, Roberi & Fraud.
You may recognize the signature ‘Doris’ almond-shaped frames from the social-media feeds of trend-setting millennials who have been championing the brand since the launch of its Instagram account in March this year. But when you take a closer look, these sunglasses are actually the ultimate throwback, reviving a retro 90s shape that we, quite frankly, never predicted would make such a comeback. Loved then by pop-culture royalty such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Brad Pitt, and Johnny Depp, the thin oval frames were maybe most famously worn by (unlikely style icon) Morpheus in the blockbuster movie The Matrix.
The brains behind the brand are best-friend duo Ali Mehrdad and Stefan Foster, who basically came up with the idea and launched the brand overnight. With no previous experience in the eyewear market, the self-taught designers and PR managers relied on their years of experience working within the fashion industry, using them to create a product they knew would be highly sought after by the label-obsessed youth of today. And according to their thousands of tags from the who’s who of Instagram, they were right.
Here, Savoir Flair rounds up some of the brand’s most famous fans.
