What do 1990s Madonna, Beyoncé during her ‘I Am Sasha Fierce’ Tour, and Keira Knightley’s Pirates of the Caribbean character all have in common? A super-fine piece of corsetry to hold it all together. From Jean Paul Gautier’s gold creation to Elizabeth Swann’s traditional Victorian costume, the humble corset has enjoyed a fair amount of spotlight (and makeovers) throughout the decades, becoming a symbol of female power that has been worn by some of the most iconic women in history.
A far cry from the 19th century undergarment, the current version by emerging New York-based brand Orseund Iris is taking the traditional qualities of the corset and catapulting them straight into 2017 – making quite the impact on the fash pack of today. The designs, which are the brainchild of 24-year-old designer Alana Johnson, are appearing all over the Instagram accounts of celebrities the likes of Bella Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski.
The trend of wearing the overtly underwired knitted corset over simple tees and button-down shirts has shone a new light on ways to style the piece, leading the way for many high-street brands to follow.
Similarly, Turkish streetwear label Les Benjamins has incorporated the structured top into its Spring/Summer 2017 collection, modeled by Rita Ora. In the lookbook, designer Bünyamin Aydin experimented with something we hadn’t seen before: a bright-red corset layered over a zip-up sweater. Meanwhile, Kendall and Kylie Jenner championed the combination of a white corset and a simple long-sleeve top in their namesake label’s first-ever drop and have continued to plug the look ever since.
