Edgardo Osorio and Aquazzura are not new names to the seasoned fashionado. The Columbian designer and his ultra-sexy designs have been at the top of fashion girls’ wish lists for many a year now and, with each passing season, they wait with bated breath to see what Osorio will do next.
His latest collection for Spring/Summer 2017 has glamorous travel written all over it, so it was only natural that we would tap the jetsetting designer for some of his must-see destinations and travel recommendations. Below, our Head of Content Noor Tehini speaks to the famed designer.
One look at your SS17 collection is enough to be transported to some exotic, far-flung holiday destination. What did you have in mind when you were designing it?
The inspiration behind the SS17 collection is slightly different from the previous ones. To celebrate my 30th birthday a few months back, I organized two parties in Florence: a surrealist ball and an eccentric jungle-themed party. I did a lot of research for both and created mood boards. For the eccentric Jungle one, the essence was an imaginary trip starting from the Amazon all the way to Papua New Guinea, with its native tribes, their feathers, and their typical dress, and then to Africa, with the Maasai and even the different desert tribes of Morocco. The collection is inspired by this research and it’s a journey through exoticism, a mix of the colors and textures from a selection of tribal dress and traditions from all over the world.
Many of your styles for SS17 bear names with African references.
I delved into traditional African tribal dress from the Masaai to the Zulus, informed myself on their traditions and society, and I’m totally seduced. I would love to go to Africa. A trip is definitely on the cards.
Let’s talk summer holidays. What do you have planned for 2017?
This summer, a few of my trips will revolve around the weddings of dear friends. One will be in June in Sicily, in Ortigia. I have another wedding in Ibiza and I will stay a few days to enjoy the summer there. In August, I am going sailing around the Amalfi coast.
Do you remember the best holiday you ever went on?
So many of them have been amazing! I love going back to Greece every summer. The Greek islands are amazing, and I particularly love Patmos!
What about your least favorite?
I am a beach person, so I love to go to the seaside. One summer I tried to go the mountains and it didn’t really work for me.
What does your ideal summer day look like?
While it might not sound very adventurous, summer for me is the beach. I love to just spend the day relaxing on the hot white sand, watching the waves, soaking up the heat, and catching up on my reading. Being Colombian from Cartagena, which is by the sea, I just need to spend some time by the ocean — it recharges my body, spirit, and mind.
What are your top 3 travel destinations in the world?
Capri, New York, and London. For energy and culture, for me it’s all about New York and London. Whenever I’m in these cities, I’m rushing to every exhibition, museum, gallery, and auction house. There’s so much to see and absorb. Capri is really special to me. It’s one of the few places (apart from home) that I love to return to on a regular basis. The azure waters, its natural beauty, the people, the villas steeped in history of Ana Capri, and the relaxed vibe just make it the perfect summer destination.

You studied and lived in both London and Florence. What are your favorite places to visit when you’re in each of these cities?
For Florence, I have to suggest The Four Seasons; it’s in this beautiful Florentine Palazzo with the most ornate frescos. It is decadent and luxurious, exactly what you would expect when staying in the Renaissance City – oh and they do a very good brunch on Sundays! For dinner, Buca Mario or Camillo are two of the best places for a classic Tuscan meal, and the Gelateria La Carraia, along the Arno, is my favourite place for a gelato (try the lemon flavor).
Florence has so many incredible palazzi and museums, but the Uffizi Gallery is an absolute must-see. If the weather is good, a stroll in the Boboli Gardens should also be on your to-do list. When shopping for an unconventional souvenir I head to Flair. It’s an interior-design store stocked with the most fantastic vintage furniture from the 50s and 60s and quirky objets d’art.
London is in so many ways a fantastic place to visit. There are so many beautiful museums, like Tate Modern and the V&A, but also amazing galleries like White Cube, Saatchi Gallery, and Almine Rech. I also like to visit the different auction houses when I’m there. If the weather is beautiful, I love to go around the parks or just walk around Notting Hill. The market is so charming!
For restaurants I love the new Isabel in Albemarle Street by the owner of Santa Cruz (Juan Santa Cruz), one of my favourite places to go for dinner. I also like River Café for a healthy lunch. For drinks, I like to go to The Chiltern Firehouse in Marylebone and, for shopping, I like to visit antique interior-design shops on Fulham Road.
If you had to choose one of your designs as the must-have piece in every traveling woman’s suitcase, which one would it be?
The ‘Christy’ flats, because you can wear them all day long, from day to night!
When you travel to Dubai, what is the one thing you look forward to most?
Seeing friends, going to the beach, and enjoying the wonderful food!
What’s your favorite place to visit while you’re here?
I love to spend time at One&Only The Palm! Another very beautiful experience is to have dinner in the desert!
