When French model, muse, and style influencer Caroline de Maigret took to social media in September 2016 to announce that she was working on a new project with Chanel, fashion mavens around the world swooned in anticipation. As the best Parisian muse since Jane Birkin, de Maigret’s impeccable taste has made her a fashion rainmaker worldwide. She has also been tapped by Chanel to star in a new campaign featuring the ‘Gabrielle’ bag.
Given her influence and rare Parisian je ne sais quoi, it makes perfect sense that Chanel would task her with embodying the pioneering spirit and timeless nature of the house founder with the new ‘Gabrielle’ release. In the following Q&A, you’ll find de Maigret speaking about her experience as the star of the campaign, followed by a preview of the campaign in video form.
What do you carry in your Chanel ‘Gabrielle’ bag?
I always have my wallet and passport in my bag; I need to feel like anything can happen and, for anything to happen, you need to be ready. I also have keys, a phone, earphones, pencils – always too many, don’t know why – as well as a lip balm and mints.
How do you like to carry your Chanel ‘Gabrielle’ bag?
I really like it when it’s half-full – it brings with it a loose and nonchalant attitude. I wear it either across the body or holding the bag like a clutch with all the chains falling on the side, which gives it a strong rock ‘n’ roll edge.
Can you describe the Chanel ‘Gabrielle’ bag in three words?
Nonchalant, elegant, 24 hours.
What moment did you like best when shooting the campaign? How was it to shoot with Karl Lagerfeld?
I loved that Karl wanted to show the real me; there is something really sincere and authentic that made me feel good on set. It was a little disturbing at first to be in an apartment that looked so much like mine – I have to say, it just felt like home! Shooting with Karl is always fun; he’s so witty and smart, and makes me laugh all the time. I love that the final picture is a smile, which belonged to that moment.
Allure has always been essential for Gabrielle Chanel, and Chanel’s ‘Gabrielle’ bag is all about allure as well. How would you describe your allure?
I’d say “androgynous”, my man says “rock ‘n’ roll”, my friends say “Parisian chic”, my mother says “effortless”, and my son says “cool”!
