When athleisure reached a vaunted place in 2016’s top fashion trends, it justified an everyday uniform of leggings, hoodies, crop tops, and sneakers. It wasn’t just the average girl who embraced athleisure – it was also the celebrity, the “It” girl, and the influencer. Suddenly, clothes that were out of fashion anywhere but at the gym were popping up on Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and Hailey Baldwin while the fashion world rushed to keep up.
It may seem like 2016’s biggest trend has run its course, but it really has just upgraded identities from athleisure to athluxury. The foundation for athleisure was activewear brands like Under Armour, Champion, and Adidas. Under Armour then collaborated with leading menswear designer Tim Coppens, Champion became the streetwear equivalent of Supreme and started tripling the price of its wares, and Adidas partnered with Alexander Wang for an 84-piece unisex collection.
Out of these high-fashion partnerships grew an increased interest in athleisure on the runway and, suddenly, brands like Versace and Tory Burch started churning out collections that offered practical but stylish sportswear. This is where athluxury finds its roots: at the intersection of athleticwear and luxury. It results in chic, polished pieces that are versatile but still elegant enough to not be mistaken for your gym look.

Become a member of the Burch-geoisie in supremely polished, preppy looks from Tory Sport, the comprehensive athluxury line by Tory Burch. It offers head-to-toe athluxury looks from the worlds of golf, tennis, and skiing.
Ader Error is South Korea’s answer to Vetements, and it’s producing some seriously stylish athluxury looks like upgraded sweatsuits and plush hoodies.
When in doubt, keep in mind the terms “polished” and “practical”. Kendall Jenner’s chic all-black ensemble worn with white sneakers represents the ideal athluxury look – plus, it couldn’t be easier to pull this off yourself.
While athleisure is more head-to-toe, athluxury encourages you to pick and choose the sportswear elements so as not to be over the top. That means keying in on a luxurious, sporty piece – like glittery track pants – and making it the centerpiece of your look.
Here, Hailey Baldwin gives the suggestion of activewear by donning a black-and-white varsity jacket, but she keeps the rest of her look elevated by pairing it with ankle boots and a preppy skirt.
If you want to make a statement with your athluxury look, take staple wardrobe basics – like sneakers and a cozy sweater – and experiment with uber-stylish versions.
Another way to try athluxury is by taking something super basic – and not elevated – like striped Adidas track pants and pairing them with a super-current statement shirt and an “It” bag. Shockingly, you could actually wear something like this to work or on a date!
One of the biggest aspects of luxury is the price tag, so reach for head-to-toe labels like Gigi Hadid in Tommy Hilfiger to cop an athluxury look.
