How fashion designers – who are consumed with the task of creating the “new” and the “next” big thing several times a year – dress every day might actually surprise you. You might expect for them to be dressed to the nines in the most current brands and trends of the day. However counterintuitive it might sound, the truth is the majority of designers prefer practicality to frivolity.
In fact, there are dozens of designers who have carved out everyday looks that are so iconic that even fashion outsiders know them on sight. While some prefer a “normcore” approach, others apply their personal style in tandem with their brand’s signature style. Whether it’s sweaters and jeans or a new suit every day, the way these five designers dress prove that fashionable labels are flexible.

Karl Lagerfeld’s look is so well-known that even people who know nothing about fashion or the fashion world can describe it. In fact, there are dozens of collectible tchotchkes like the ‘Karl Junior’ doll and Fendi’s fur-trimmed ‘Karlito’ bag charm that bear his iconic likeness. We’re willing to bet there are very few people who have seen the Kaiser sans sunglasses, a fitted Dior suit, and fingerless gloves.

It’s hard to find a picture of Jonathan Anderson when he’s not making this pose with his body. He is always leaping out of nowhere after shows at his eponymous label J.W. Anderson as well as Loewe, and then disappearing again just as quickly – not one for the spotlight, that one. However “normcore” and subtle Anderson’s preferred sweater-and-jeans uniform might be, his signature look belies the truly brilliant, challenging, and eccentric designs that he creates for both men and women.

Although he crafts some of the most stunning red-carpet gowns of any designer in history, you will always find Elie Saab in an impeccably tailored suit. He usually prefers his look without a tie and with the top button undone and, occasionally, he swaps his suit jacket for a leather-moto version instead.

Not only is Carolina Herrera responsible for reinventing the classic white button-down shirt for womenswear, but you’ll also always see her sporting one on the daily. Naturally, Herrera’s favorite button-down is of her own design, which explains why it fits like a glove and flatters with a face-framing, turned-up collar. She is her own best representation – of both a modern/classic aesthetic provided by the iconic American brand and her timeless sense of style.

Victoria Beckham’s polished bob and enormous sunglasses are all that remain from her years as a Spice Girl. Over the past decade, Beckham has reinvented herself from an aristocratic fashionista into a serious fashion trendsetter by slowly shedding bodycon looks in favor of a more relaxed silhouette. She has also applied casual, slouchy-loving preferences to her eponymous brand – a change that marks both maturation for her designs and her personal sense of style. Lately, street-style sneakers have replaced towering stiletto heels, and minidresses have been swapped out for cozy sweaters and oversized suits.
