Reigning street-style specialist, Alexander Wang, has a new outlook on urban living, and it’s an uncompromisingly tough one. Though the couture feel of this collection cannot be denied (for example: most of the fabrics were custom developed by Wang himself), the stiffness of the outfits carried out a message of threat.
The main method of human communication comes from the face: the eyes, the mouth, facial expressions – which is why the notion of suppressing these qualities is disturbing in nature. Wang’s use of fishnet turtlenecks that covered the models’ mouths cut us off from human communication. In its place, the clothes were able to broadcast without interference the idea that we must shield ourselves from the spiky urban jungles so many of us now dwell in. Swaddled in slick patent leathers, puffy vests, thick shiny tweeds, and suede, this collection comes to us from a remote and distant place. Yet, there is an undeniable attraction to the mysterious and the unknown – which is why this is Wang’s most accomplished collection to date. It forcibly draws you in.
