The new Louis Vuitton look collaged together references from multiple eras and iconic styles, landing on an aesthetic that was sleek, urban, and surprisingly casual.

Where Louis Vuitton patrons have for decades selected the brand to clearly denote status to all, Nicolas Ghesquière’s new “borderless” direction for Fall/Winter 2017 scrubbed the presentation of overt LV references (save for the bags). According to show notes, the aim was “to do away with frontiers altogether and shift into the evocation of the nomadic, where the city blends with different landscapes” – a contradictory notion given the show’s location at the super exclusive Cour Marly inside the Louvre.

Thus, the new Louis Vuitton look collaged together references from multiple eras and iconic styles, landing on an aesthetic that was sleek, urban, and surprisingly casual except for those stunning multi-pelted fur looks. Even so, those textured furs were paired with tailored trousers, not dresses, and therefore made a case for extravagance for day.

Sporty Klein blue separates, slick leather trenches, moto jackets, graphic knit sweaters, tweed minis, shearling-lined denim outerwear, and silky slip dresses were paired together in versatile ways, demonstrating the capsule nature of the new Louis Vuitton wardrobe. The mix-and-match potential here was high. Chains were a repeated motif, clinging to the front of a motocross leather jackets and criss-crossing the front of basic khakis. There were lots of glossy looks, like leather miniskirts and gleaming trousers, which complemented an array of flat leather footwear.

One can’t help but agree that this diverse and understated collection will look stylish no matter the city, landscape, or frontier one might find oneself in.

One can’t help but agree that this diverse and understated collection will look stylish no matter the city, landscape, or frontier one might find oneself in.
