Maximalism, suiting, and velvet appeared frequently at Fashion Week in New York, London, and Milan for Fall/Winter 2017, but sister fashion capital Paris had something to say about all three trends as well. While maximalism seems to be a reaction to increased political and cultural tensions around the world, suiting explored the role of women in a society that still struggles with the notion of equality among the sexes.
Velvet is in a league of its own, preferred by hundreds of designers for Fall/Winter 2017 because of its extravagant finish and ability to look amazing, no matter how it’s draped. However, Paris Fashion Week came up with the ultimate complement to all three trends: high-shine leather. While sequins and velvets have a gleam all on their own, this particular trend is concerned with an extremely lustrous finish – think: glossy trousers, metallic jackets, and liquid-leather coats.
If you really want to go all out for Fall/Winter 2017, you’ll pair one of those super shiny pieces with thigh-high leather boots (the louder the better). While high-octane shine can be really sexy – like a ruched Saint Laurent minidress or a Lanvin suit – it can also be sophisticated when paired with muted neutrals.
